Fake Website

Cyber criminals create a website, with the intention of misleading visitors that the website has been created by a different person or organization. For example someone can create a website with screen that will look exactly as the original website of a reputed organization or bank. Shopping on a fake website could result in loss of personal or financial information or dropping of virus or malware on the computer.

Incident

The fraudsters had made a fake website of SBI http://www.onlinesbi.digital and has started forwarding it to the people asking their password and account update. Public think that this is the real page and they login in with their ID and password. Nearly 250 people are already scammed.

How to Identify a Fake Website

Pay Close Attention to the URL

You should look for the URL address. If it has https:// at the beginning of the address (S in https:// stands for secure and indicates that the website uses encryption to transfer data), it is most likely safe. If a website uses http://, even though website may not be fake, but to be on the safe side, you should never enter personal information into a site beginning with http://. On a safe website we will see a small padlock.

Check the domain name

A favorite trick of scammers is to create websites with addresses that mimic those of large brands or companies, like Yah00.com or Amaz0n.net.

Do a Who IS Lookup

The Whois Lookup gives you information about who a domain name is registered to, where they are, and how long the website has been active.

Find their contact information

Ideally, a safe website will clearly display an email address or a phone number or a physical address all all of these. Though these don’t guarantee protection, but they indicate that there’s likely someone you can reach out to if you need assistance.

Keep away from deals that are too good to be true

Sometimes retailers heavily discount older merchandise to offload excess goods or make room for new products. But if you find a site that has the latest iPad model listed at an 80% discount, chances are high you are being deceived.

Learning

An unsafe website can spread malware, steal your information, send spam, and more. To protect yourself and your personal information, it’s important to understand the tricks of the cyber criminals. One of the tricks is to create a fake website and attract innocent visitor to that. Instead of feeling threatened by all the ways fake websites could fool you, realize that by knowing what to look for, you’re empowered to take control of your online experience.
